If you sat five Cubans down and asked them all how a certain dish should taste, you would probably get five different opinions on how that item should taste and best represent Cuban cuisine. Cuban food reflects its rich socio-cultural history and also continues to evolve as a natural byproduct of our creative spirit. Essentially, Cuban food is a mix of Spanish (Spain), African, and the food sources found naturally on the island. But there are few general flavors that inhabit the Cuban palette. At Caña, foremost is our sofrito, mojo and verde sauces. They are the trilogy and base of much of our cooking! We also are fortunate to have tremendous organic farming in California and whenever possible try to incorporate the rich flavors and textures locally produced. Here at Caña we feel Oakland and Cuba are kindred spirits with its rich diversity, love of culture and sense of consciousness…..and play!
Our mission here at Vegan Mob is to provide nutritious and healthy food with plant-based ingredients. Our passion is to help surrounding communities by empowering them with food they love and enjoy, while also supporting a healthy life-style. Toriano Gordon is a dedicated father and husband from San Francisco’s Fillmore District. After dedicating a decade of his life to helping at-risk and formerly incarcerated youth in the San Francisco Bay Area, he decided to pursue his lifelong passion of cooking. Toriano experienced a huge shift in his health and well-being after adopting a plant-based diet and he now feels compelled to share this with others. His menu is comprised of traditional family soul food recipes and barbecue fusion. Be sure to follow our journey. We look forward to sharing our food with you!
EST 2016. Soul. Passion. Tradition. Barbecue found Matt as much as Matt found it. Getting his start, like so many pitmasters before him, Matt began by experimenting in his grandmother’s backyard, ultimately developing a singular style of barbecue that expresses the soul of his people and the power of his imagination. The Horn way features the meat-smoking techniques of Central Texas infused with the deep foodways of the Black South. From farmers markets to his wildly popular pop-ups, Matt Horn has introduced a new food movement that draws from those roots in Texas and the South. Matt calls it “West Coast barbecue.” It’s a cusine that tells the story of their people and their traditions. This is why Horn Barbecue is launching in West Oakland. This neighborhood was the cultural center for food, music, and the arts for the families of the great Black migration. Matt cooks with the passion and purpose of a chef who knows that he has a responsiblity to represent the best of his people. “I am their story,” says Matt. “We are their wildest dreams.” The dream is Horn Barbecue.
KARIBU is a Swahili word that means “you are welcome.” The atmosphere of this wine bar and venue ensures that the space lives up to its name. The brainchild of Dr. Chris Wachira, the first Kenyan-born Californian winemaker, this place embodies inclusivity and fun.
