Anthony Overton founded the Bee in 1925 on the profits of a cosmetics company and a bank he also owned. In 1930 the paper ran a contest to elect a “Mayor of Bronzeville” — and that is where the name of Chicago's South Side comes from. A neighborhood of a hundred thousand people is called what a Black newspaper decided to call it.
